CUP CRICKET MATCH

WELLINGTON FOLLOWS ON The end of the second day's play in the Centennial Cup cricket match at Eden Park on Saturday between the Auckland and Wellington representative teams saw the home side in a strong position with a lead of 162 runs on the first innings, Wellington thus having failed to save a follow-on. The Wellington batsmen were on the defensive for the greater pari of the day, as was indicated by the fact that they scored 300 runs, compared with the 490 made on the previous day. Duffy and Osborn, the not out batsmen, carried the overnight score from 21 to 56 before the former went leg before to Uarlard. Menzies and Osborn batted very patiently, the latter being uncomfortable in facing the slow bowlers. However, he managed to keep them at bay and his total crept slowly up. Soon after reaching his halfcenturv he left his crease to play a ball from Sutcliffe and was smartly stumped The score at the luncheon adjournment was rio for two wickets. Menzies had started rather scratchily, being unable to time the ball well. He improved after lunch, however, and made some nice strokes with drives in front of the wicket and glances toward thirdman. He looked set for a century when he was caught at second slip. A ball from Nottman nipped up off the pitch and Kerr held a spectacular catch. With the dismissal 9! Menzies Welling ton's chances of overtaking the home team s total had greatly deteriorated, more especially as both O'Brien and Wilson had already been disposed of. The former was batting very confidently when he was caught behind the wicket Wilson, the Wellington captain, who has been compiling big score,s very consistently in club matches throughout the season, was greatly surprised when he was bowled round his legs by Garrard. Of the remaining batsmen Mooney played some nice shots in scorins: 44. Rogers hit out well in making 21, while McCarthy and Andrews did their best to, avert a follow-on 111 the 20 minutes remaining for play Usborn and Mooney scored 14 without the lass of a Pearson used his bowlers with sound judgment and the batsmen were unable to take liberties with any of them. Nottman obtained the best figures and he bowled very; ftell Maintaining a perfect length he obtained ia lot of nip off the wicket and this had the batsmen watching him carefully, he" "PJJiaJI his deliveries cleverly and he had to be played all the time. Kerr is having a good match for his first representative appearance He followed his century on the first day with an excellent bowling performance and took a couple of catches. His fielding was good and his returning to the wickefkeeper was by far the' best seen in the game so far. Although a number of loose deliveries were punished, Garrard had all the batsmen watching him closely, and some of them were Quite unable to pick his wrong-un. Sutcliffe dismissed a .batsman who was defying the tack with a stubborn defence Harrison never looked dangerous, although he cot a wicket toward the end of the innings. mArn Play will be resumed at 10.30 this mornIne and cease at 5.30 p.m.. the hL,~ beine to stive the visiting players m°re time to prepare for their denarture on the limited express this evening Scores: AUCKLAND First Innings " - • • • ■ 4f!H WELLINGTON 'First Innings J.
