CARTAGE OF STOCK
WORK STOPPAGE EFFECTS The disorganisation caused in the railway and other transport services when stock slaughtering operations at meat works were interrupted was mentioned yesterday by a member of the trade. The works in ohe Westfield district, which are the largest of their kind in the Dominion, draw stock from as* far north as Maungaturoto and southward to the King Country. Stock is also brought from the Bay of Plenty district. There are heavy demands on cattle waggons to transport the thousands of head of cattle dealt with daily at the works and road services also carry considerable numbers. _ Much advance organisation in assembling stock and arranging waggons was entailed and when work stoppages caused stock to be held there were reactions right through the system. It was especially desirable in these days when transport services were taxed to capacity that there should be no delays or interruptions to slaughtering operations.
