FOOTWEAR INDUSTRY
NEW AGREEMENT MADE (0.C.) WELLINGTON, Friday Gratification that a complete agreement had been reached in conciliation on the workers' application for a new award for the footwear industry was expressed to-day by Mr. D. I. Macdonald, secretary ot' tlio New Zealand Footwear Manufacturers' Federation, The old award had largely been followed, he said, but there had been a readjustment of the wage rates for females to bring them more into line with the general standard of the Arbitration Court. However, the chief virtue of the agreement was that the parties had again settled their dispute without refereuco to the Court. They had done so for nearly 20 years. Referring to the industry's war effort, Mr. Macdonald said it had been steadily increasing its ; output of footwear for the three New Zealand services and latterly in addition it had accepted substantial orders for export to other Empire forces in the East and elsewhere. Already it had produced nearly 750,000 pairs of boots, shoes and sandals for defence requirements, and by the . end of 1942 it would have made nearly a further 1,000,000 pairs. This was surely a splendid example of cooperation between employers and workers. - ,
