CHRISTMAS PRESENTS s « EARLY SHOPPING URGED Although the proportion of New Zealand goods has never been greater, the quantity and variety of merchandise available in the city for Christmas shopping this year is smaller than for many years. This effect of import restrictions and various factors associated with the war 'will consequently limit the public greatly in its annual selection of gifts and holiday needs. While Christmas shopping has not yet begun in earnest, biisiness is reported to be good with an improvement during the last few days as a result of the more seasonable weather. Crowds in the city yesterday were large and shop assistants had a busy day. 1 Because of the limited stocks, shopkeepers state that it is advisable to make early purchases. Contrary to former years, reserve stocks are meagre, if they exist at all and purchasers who leave their shopping until the last moment may be disappointed in their ] demand for many lines. A representative of one large store said yesterday, for instance, that his firm's immediate supplies of suoh popular gifts as handkerchiefs and gloves might possibly be exhausted beiore Christmas.
