LAST SEASON'S MAIZE
PURCHASE OF SURPLUS ASSURANCE BY MINISTER (0.C.) _ WHAKATANE, Friday The Minister of Marketing, the Hon. J. G. Barclay, said yesterday that* he had found that quite a number of maize growers were concerned regarding the lifting of last season's crop. "I can assure growers," he continued, "that if at the end of the season there is a surplus which cannot be marketed by merchants through the usual channels the Government will implement its undertaking to take over any surplus at the fixed price. However, that position may iiot arise. If it does it will be met." The Minister also stated that as there : would be none of the present growing season's maize available until next June the stocks from last season would have to serve all requirements until the new crop came in. To induce growers to hold their crops for spread delivery the price had been increased for the later months. He understood it was quite a usual practice for some growers to hold their maize in cribs until toward the end of the season.
