OPERATIONS OVER TRIPOLI SERGEANT OBSERVER'S DEATH Advice has been received that Ser-geant-Observer Selwyn Gibson ShirleyThomson, who was recently reported missing and believed killed, was killed when he was shot down over Tripoli on August 30. The International Red Cross states that he was buried in a little cemetery in Tripoli.
Sergeant-Observer Shirley-Thomson was born at Balmoral Station North Canterbury, and educated at the New Plymouth Boys' High School. He made 30 operational flights over Germany before being transferred to Malta at his request. He was one of a party of airmen entertained by the King and Queen at Windsor Castle. His wife lives at Manly Lodge, Whangaparaoa, and his mother at Elmscourt, Wellington. Sergeant-Observer Shirley-Thomson is the second of three brothers to have died within months. The third brother is serving overseas with the Expeditionary Force. CAPTURED IN CRETE ADVICES TO RELATIVES Advice received yesterday by Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Craig, of Liverpool Street, Epsom, from the Minister of Defence states that their son, Driver James Colvin Craig, reported missing in Crete on June 21, is a prisoner of war in the German prison camp Stalag VIII. Last week Mrs. Craig received a card from her son, written in July, reporting that he was well and in a transit prison camp in Crete. A letter from her son, Sapper Owen Bayliss-Jones, stating that he is a prisoner of war in a transit camp in Crete, has been received by Mys. H. BaylissJones, of Goodall Street, Hillsborough. Sapper Bayliss-Jones, who was reported missing in Crete, left New Zealand with the first echelon. Advice that their son, Private J. Telfer, is in a transit camp in Crete has been received by Mr. and Mrs. A. Telfer, of Viewland Avenue, Onehunga. Private Telfer was posted missing in Greece. Advice that her son, Staff-Sergeant Clive Lynn Hassett, who is aged 22, is a prisoner of war in the German camp Stalag VIIIA, has been received by Mrs. G. Hassett, of 271 Point Chevalier Boad, Point Chevalier. Educated .at Newton West School and Seddon Memorial Technical College, StaffSergeant Hassett was farming for some time in the Te Puke district. Before the war he joined the permanent staff and was later an instructor at Papakura camp. He left New Zealand with the Third Echelon and was captured in Greece.
