Stainer, Reginald Arthur—Mrs. E. Staiger, England (mother)1 • LIEUTENANT W. H. McXAY PROMINENT MAORI ATHLETE (0.C.) HASTINGS. Monday The death of Lieutenant W. H. McKay, of Hastings, which w; : reported this week, was the result of wounds received in Crete last May. He was shot through both legs by machinegun fire and, being unable to walk, was taken prisoner of war. He was taken to Greece, and died in an Australian hospital just outside Athens. Volunteering for service in the early days of the war, Lieutenant McKay entered camp with the Maori Battalion and gained his commission before leaving New Zealand. He went through the Greek campaign. He was a son of Mrs. W. P. McKay, of Mahia Peninsula, and was about 35. After receiving his education at Waerenga-ahika College, near Gisborne, Lieutenant McKay spent six years on the teaching staff of the college. Forced to give up this profession because of his eyesight, he moved to Hastings, where he undertook outdoor work. Subsequently he entered journalism as a sporting writer. Lieutenant McKay represented the New Zealand Maoris at Rugby, hockey and tennis. He played against the Indian hockey team three seasons ago. He was also prominent as a tennis player, and in 1934 he was one of four men who played exhibition matches against visiting British tennis players at Rotorua. VATICAN CITY BROADCAST PRISONER IN ITALY A personal message from SecondLieutenant E. H. Bishop, who is a prisoner of war in Italy, to Mr. L. Evans, of Taupiri Street, Te Kuiti, was broadcast by the Vatican City radio last night. The message read: "Through the kindness of the Vatican I am able to send you a message. I am fit and well. Ask everyone to write via American Clipper."
