SUCCESS OP TEA DROP FOXOLA DEFEATS SPRINTERS BEAU VAALS SCORES NICELY by archer The Melrose Maiden Handicap was run in two divisions, Tea Drop winning the first at long odds „ after many attempts, and Gayjax the second, narrowly defeating the favourite, Sir Reynard, who was unlucky. The pacemakers, Verus and Beaucoup, were still in front at the distance in the first division and' were being closely pursued by Lady Pay and Taku Kara, when Tea Drop made a sharp run ;tnd won very nicely from Verus, who displayed great promise. Beaucoup ran her best race to date for a ciose third, and Taku Kara, who was hampered for room in the straight, was fourth ahead of Lady Pay, Gem Tray and Romance, J. he place-getters all began from outsule positions, Tea Drop having 14, \ cms 13 and Beaucoup II). Nicely handled by the apprentice F. Beguely, Gayjax scored narrowly in the second division. After following The Crow, Radio Call and Last Survey into the straight, Gayjax came through strongly, and lie held off a very determined challenge to win by a neck from Sir Reynard, who came fast oil the outside after having none of the luck in running. The Crow held on well for third after showing early speed, and Vaalsnioss was fourth, ahead of Sylonyx and Waterloo Bridge. Radio Call tired quickly in iho last 100 yards. Strong Finishing Run Finishing strongly on the rails, Golden Survey scored decisively in the Filford Handicap froui Odtaa, who paid double figures for a place. Verulam and Odtaa reached the front quickly and they led into the straight from Silver Clarion, Bronze Meter and Golden Bonnet, who were together ahead of Miss Wheriko, Golden Survey and Onetea. Odtaa led at the distance, but could not hold off Golden Survey, who won going away by two lengths. Verulam battled on to be a head away third, and Babrow, finishing strongly, was fourth, ahead of Bronze Meter, Heroic Star, Silver Clarion and Little Ruse. Silver Clarion was disappointed when he attempted to go through below the distance, and then finished wSakly. After racing disappointingly for a long time, Beverley was responsible for a big surprise in winning the Tiri Hurdles, for which he was 12lh and 11th fancy in a field of 14. Beverley ran to the pacemaker, Etaro, about half a mile from home, and hC led over the last fence to win decisively by four lengths from Glen Connell, who was always in the first four. Flylite came from fifth at the turn to be two lengths away third, and Besiege was fourth, followed by Gay Movie, Northlander and Forest Glen. Glen Connell would have been harder to beat only for striking hard at the fence near the fivefurlong post. Etaro did not jump with his usual confidence and appeared beaten when he fell at the last fence. Night Hawk fell at the first fence and Wong Foo and Gay Opal at the third. Alison Cup Contest The Alison Cup provided a fine finish, the sixth and eleventh fancy, Royevrus, staging a return to form to win narrowly from the top-weight, Beau Leon, who finished in great style. After a false start, from which Orelio, Tellsom and Lovaals went about two furlongs, a good start was made. Lovaals and Regal Fox, pulling hard, ran to the front early from Royevrus and British Talent. Royevrus assumed command about five furlongs from home, and he stayed on solidly to win by a neck from Beau Leon, who came home well from sixth at the turn. Orelio, after challenging strongly at the distance, was a head away third, and Court Favourite, who swerved right to the outside when looking very dangerous, was fourth, followed by Regal Fox. Clipper, The Cardinal, Wildore and Erlick. Beau Leon and Orelio, who missed the jump-out, put up fine performances. Regal Fox was by no means disgraced and would have been harder to beat if he had run more kindly early. Another two-year-old winner came from the stable of F. Smith when Beau Vaal6 won the Cambria Handicap. Smith had won earlier this season with Dash o' Dink, Royal Merit and Kentish. Beau Vaals jumped out first from No. 1 arid then dropped in behind Transcend and Orakau, with SlePpy Fox and Bonny Pay handy. Once in line for the post Beau Vaals came through on the rails, and he -won by a length and a-half from Orakau, who held on jjamel.v. Royal Merit ran on solidly from sixth at the turn for a good third, and Bonny Pay was fourth, followed by Sleepy Fox, Century and Transcend, who tired quickly in the last 50 yards. River Plate Improved Showing improved form, the three-year-old River Plate scored decisively at double figures in the Takapuna Plate: Silver Mist and Cherry's Ticket set a fast pace, and they were the leaders into thef straight from Neenah, Prince Louis, Kadina and Paymaster, with Kiver Plate moving tip. Near the distance River Plate drew up to the leaders, and he came on to win by a length and a-half from Cherry's Ticket, who finished gamely. - Betterman made a good run to be a head away third, and Hogarth was fourth, ahead of Silver Mist, Balblair, Foxlore, Justina and Acreman. Relishing the easy going, Foxola scored at good odds in the Cheltenham Handicap. Te Takina began quickly and led into the straight three lengths clear of Rex Maitland, Dinky Di. Sore Pay, Bronwen and Foxola. Once in line for the post, Foxola came fast and she won Ify half a length from Harmony, who finished at a great rate on the rails from a long way back. Cambria, who drew the outside at the barrier, also came home well for third, and Te Takina was fourth, succeeded by Trebor, Bronwen, Rex Maitland and Sure Pay. W. Ensor, rider of Harmony, lost one of his irons. Beginning better than usual, Sea-law was always in the first three in the Ponui Handicap, and he took charge at the turn to win nicely. Bronze Moth began quickly and carried' on the running from Sea-law, Bronze Ora, Brahman, Tea Gong and Air Port. Rounding the bend Sea-law ran to the front, and he was always the winner in the straight. There was a great race for second, Expellant finishing fast from well back to beat Silver Quex, who also came home solidly. Brahman ran a good rare for fourth after having none the best of the early running, and then in a hunch were Bronze Moth. Kraal, Gay Rosette, Bronze Ora and Royal Message.
