JOCKEYS' DEATHS
INQUESTS AT HAMILTON POOLE AND McTAVISH I ACCIDENTS AT TWO MEETINGS (0.C.) HAMILTON, Thursday Inquests into the deaths of two jockeys, Mostyn Morshead 1 oole, aged 16 of To Rapa, and Roderick \\ atson < McTavisli, aged 39, of Auckland, were concluded to-day by the coroner, Mr. Ai (j. Ward. Poole was injured when lie was thrown from his mount, Irish Pearl, at the Ohinemuri Jockey Club s meeting at Paeroa on September -7, and died soon after admission to the Waikato Hospital. McTavisk was one of six jockeys whose mounts fell 111 the first race at the second day of the j Waikato Racing Club's spring meeting at Te Rapa on November 17, and he was killed instantly. Giving evidence at the inquest on Poole, Frederick Richard Meynell, jockey, of To Rapa, stated, that he noticed deceased's mount finish fast: n the first division of the first race, the Maiden Handicap. The course as heavy and slippery, and a shoit distance past the finishing line deceased was thrown. No Interference Witness said there appeared to be no interferienoe to Irish 1 earl, and the horse did not collide with any othei horse. In witness' opinion Irish I earl s fall was due to its finishing too fast. Dr Ellis Thacker Dick, Hamilton, stated that Poole was admitted to the Waikato Hospital. He died next morning. The only external injury was a bruise over the right eye. Death was due to cerebral compression. The coroner returned a verdict that Poole was accidentally killed as a result of injuries received when ho was thrown from his mount. The Te Rapa Fatality Nome Robb McKenzie, jockey, of Hamilton East, and Leslie Claude Brown, jockev, of Frankton, riders or Marinoto and" Flying Cross respectively in the race at Te Rapa in which McTavish was killed, gave evidence that the race was a clean one and that prior to the accident there was no interference. whatsoever. The mishap appeared to be caused hv the forelegs of | deceased's horse, Golden \ alley, becoming entangled with the heels of the two leading horses. Dr Thomas Campbell Fraser stated that death was due to a fractured that deceased was accidentally killed was returned.
