RECONSTRUCTION PLANS OPENING OF CONFERENCE

An interim conference of the Dominion Reconstruction Movement, which is being attended by delegates and speakers from many parts of Dominion, was opened in the Y.VV .U.A. Hall yesterday morning, and further sessions were held in the afternoon and evening. Canon W. W .Averill presided over a large attendance at the opening session. In declaring the conference open, the , Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, said an ambitious programme of subjects was set down for discussion. Canon Averill said the purpose of the conference was to endorse and_ extend wonk like that already done }n England, and to apply it to the needs of this country. A message was read from Archbishop Averill wishing the conference success. After an address on physical wellbeing by Dr. Ulric Williams, a report) on health was presented by Mr. T. W. Dick of Wellington. Resolutions were adopted urging that a comprehensive national educational campaign be launched based on natural laws ot health; that children from three years of age upward be medically examined ' free- and that one meal a day properly prepared according to modern food science be provided m all schools. Other resolutions aimed at retaining vitamins in food and the free provision of foods containing necessary vitamins to childre, The afternoon session was devoted to women's interests, delegates from a large number of women's organisations being present. Addresses were given by Miss Joan Sutherland and Mrs. Iledda Dyson, convener of the women s section after which a number of resolutions were discussed. A motion was adopted urging that the basis of reconstruction be the simple spiritual principles of the Christian faith, huinamtarianism and justice, which should be taught in the home and the schools. The evening session was devoted _ to national nutrition, addresses being given by Dr. Guy Chapman and Mr. J. W. Griffiths.
