CAPTAIN COOK MEMORIALS
Sir, —In the Herald of November 24 there is an interesting account of the unveiling of a stone monument coinmemorating the landing at Kopu, 172 years ago, of Captain Cook from the Endeavour. Mr. J. Thorn, M.P., speaking as chairman of the National Historical Committee of the New Zealand Centennial Council, is reported as saying "that of the seven Cook landing memorials to be built in New Zealand, the first two were in his electorate. J. he first was at Kopu and the other would be at Mercury Bay." But there are others of much earlier date; one, a plain stone obelisk bearing the word "Cook" is at Ship Cove, Queen Charlotte Sound, Marlborough. Another is on the foreshore at Gisborne. "The statement that those present, some 200 people, included "a relative by marriage of direct descendants or Captain Cook" must also in its present form be challenged, as Captain Cook left no direct descendants. C. J. 0 Keefe.
