HEALTH CAMPS
SUMMER PROGRAMME TOTAL OF 400 CHILDREN APPEAL FOR FUNDS ' An appeal is being made to friends and supporters of the children's camp movement by the Auckland Central Council of the New Zealand Federation of Health Camps l'or funds to assist the council's 1941-42 programme. Moneys made available by the Government from the sale of health stamps will have to be augmented by private contributions, which carry a Government subsidy. The secretary of the council, Mrs. B. J. McKendrick, said yesterday that 400 children would be sent into camp this summer from the district extending between Mercer and. North Cape and including the Coroniandel Peninsula. The selection was being made by officers of the Health Department. Two parties of 150 children each would be accommodated at Port Waikato between December 30 and the end of January- and two more parties of 50 each at Campbell's Bay between January 8 and February 9. It was expected that Waikato children would also bo accommodated at Port Waikato under the control of the organisation in that area.
Mrs. McKendrick expressed a hope that it would bo possible to begin the erection of the permanent King George V. Memorial Health Camp at Pigeon Mountain, overlooking the Tamaki. River, in time for the buildings to be used before the end of the summer. After meeting the cost of this summer's camps, private contributions received as a result of the present appeal would bo devoted to the upkeep of the permanent camp, which would bo open all the year round and would cost about £SOOO a year to run.
