DEFENCE PROBLEM

PENDING CONFERENCE AUSTRALIA AND DOMINION FINANCE MINISTER'S VISIT "I am going to meet Sir Robert Brooke-Popham, the Australian Government and probably the Australian War Council, to discuss the problems of the defence of Australia and New Zealand, to ensure that the maximum facilities are provided for both countries," said the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, who arrived from Wellington yesterday morning. The Minister expects to spend eight to ten days in Australia.

Mr. Nash said his trip had not arisen out of the recent developments in Japan. It would be valuable, however, to have discussions at present, to enable him to obtain the view of the Australian Government and return to discuss it with his colleagues in New Zealand.

"I am also going to discuss with the Australian Government the Avhole of the air transport problem in the Australian and New Zealand area, for the purpose of forwarding to the maximum the interests of the British Commonwealth, Australia, and New Zealand in particular, in association with the United States," the Minister added. "The Tasman service as well as the South Pacific service will be discussed."
