DENTAL DECAY CAUSES

ADDRESS TO FOOD LEAGUE The main causes of dental decay, and suggestions for controlling it, were given by Mr. F. 13. Rice, senior Government dental officer for Auckland, when speaking to members of the New Zealand Women's Food Value League at the monthly luncheon yesterday. Miss M. Maindonald presided. There must be something wrong when 95 per cent of children from five to 14 years of ago showed dental decay. Mr. Rice said. One of the first symptoms of bodily ill-health was dental decay and before this could take place there must be an acid condition in the saliva which washed and cleansed the teeth. This acid condition was caused by fatigue, worry or wrong food. Refined carbohydrates were clogging foods as the abrasive action of roughage was absent. The best cleansing foods were fruits, meat and vegetables. It. was very important to make cleansing foods available to the lower income group, who comprised ,the majority of people in New Zealand. Important factors in a child's welfare were sleep and sunshine, plenty of vegetables, eggs, milk and raw fruit, the speaker concluded.
