LARGE SLIP AT TUAKAU
FORMIDABLE CLEARING TASK (0.C.) PUKEKOHE, Monday The slip on a cliff face abutting the Pukekohe-Glenmurray highway near the bridge across the Waikato River at Tuakau, which was stated previously to contain tens of thousands of yards of earth, was again mentioned at today's meeting of the Franklin County Council. The engineer, Mr. A. C. Bettany, reported that a power shovel was being employed to keep the roadway clear of the earth as it encroached. The machine was able to keep ahead of the task to the extent that it could be taken off this job for a fortnight or so from time to time. The Highways Board paid three-quarters of the cost of the clearing work and the council one-quarter. In answer to a question, Mr. Bettany said it might take five years to remove the whole of the slip in this way.
