MAORI POPULATION
STEADY INCREASE SHOWN (8.1t.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday
The Maori population has again shown a steady increase, the total at March 31, 1941, being 92,248, compared with 90,980 at the corresponding date last year, according to the annual report of the Native Department, which was tabled in the House of Representatives to-day.
Referring to the staffing of the department, the report stated that 61 of its members wero serving with the armed forces. No ( fewer than 16 had gained commissions.
The number of alienations of native land during the year was 441, affecting an area of 38,589 acres, about the same area as last year. The estimated area of native land remaining to Maoris was 4,008,000 acres. Land vested in the Maori land boards amounted to 660,240 acres.
Tho expenditure from the Consolidated Fund on native affairs was £437,303 and tho recoveries £24,400.
