The Stones Cry Out

The stones cry oat! "We were an Abbey, stepped in gears Where Seines u:(ere crowned with pomp end cheers. We were a sepulchre as well For poet, sage, and those who fell In battle, when some bloodt) fight Was made to break, a foe-man s might." The stones cry out! "A House of Parliament were we Where laws were made, and speech was free" "The naoe, the transept, and the walls. The whole of if—we were St. Paul's" The stones cry oat! "We were a palace, houses too, A home for kings and folk like you. We were a city huge and gay Before the bombers came this Way." The stones cry out. Defiantly! They know not fear nor cringing shame. For like a Phoenix bathed In flame, From out the debris and the dust They will arise and upward thrust— Those blasted cities all reborn. With scars like medals, proudly worn, A symbol for the world to see— THAT ENGLAND IS—WILL ALWAYS BE.—Daintry Birch. Jane 1941.
