CAMPAIGN OPENED

WAITEMATA ELECTION MR. W. B. DARLOW'S POLICY The harbour bridge scheme was put forward as the main item of his policy by Mr. W. B. Dariow. Independent candidate for the Waitemata seat, when he opened his campaign at Takapuna last night. Mr. C. A. Snedden presided over an attendance of about 40. "The future of this district relies on the bridge." said Mr. Dariow. "Access is the chief factor in the development of any district and lack of access has resulted in the North Shore lagging behind the southern suburbs, if the Government can spend more than £20,000,000 on public works it is time for a bridge over the harbour, either as a national highway or on a toll basis."

Mr. Darlow suggested that if work on the bridge began after the war it would give employment to men returning from overseas. The housing shortage in Auckland was described by the candidate as appalling. Mr. Darlow said that although the Government was building houses which contractors would have constructed in any case it was turning a deaf ear to many hundreds needing homes. Thousands of pounds had been wasted on Government departmental buildings, when the workers and materials were urgently required in other spheres. Although the 40-hour week had gradually met with general approval New Zealand had now lost, many thousands of workers who had gone overseas, commented Mr. Darlow, and the present scarcity of commodities would increase as time went on unless more energy was put into production. A motion of confidence in the candidate was carried unanimously.
