Sergeant Austin, who is now stationed at Tauranga, jumped into the Waikato River on the afternoon of November 15 to rescue an elderly woman who had fallen in from the Hamilton railway bridge. He was on duty in Victoria Street when the call came, and he hurried across the bridge, a distance of 300 yards, scrambled down a steep hank and, removing his tunic and boots, dived into the river. The sergeant had to swim some distance before he caught the woman, who was almost unconscious, and he then pulled her into the bank. Sergeant Austin suffered illness following the rescue.
