HAVOC IN HOTEL
EXPLOSION OF BOILER
SEVERAL PERSONS HURT
DINING ROOM WIiECKKI) (0.C.) GREY MOUTH, Friday Several persons were injured when a high-pressure boiler used for a hotuater supply at the Empire Hotel, Waiuta, exploded at about 9.30 a.m. The explosion is thought to have been clue to the freezing of the water pipes, exceptionally heavy frosts having been experienced of late.
When the explosion occurred Mrs. J. J. Ryan, wife of the proprietor, was standing in front of the stove and she was severely burned about the body and is suffering from shock. She was taken to the Reefton Hospital. Mr. H. Reich received a severe cut on the head. The proprietor, Mr. Ryan, Miss I). Willis, a waitress, and Mr. J. Fisher suffered minor injuries to the face and head. Messrs. L. Wilson and T. Cameron suffered slightly from shock.
Most of those injured were having breakfast in the dining room when the explosion occurred. Both the kitchen and the dining room were wrecked. The force of the explosion may bo gauged by the fact that the cylinder was blown 50 yards away.
