NEW FREE KINDERGARTEN
A free kindergarten has been established at Birkenhead as a result of the efforts of a committee of women, of which Mrs. W*. 13. Darlow is chairman. The committee was appointed just hefore last Christmas, following a meeting addressed at Birkenhead by Miss Newman, a vice-president of the Auckland Kindergarten Council.
Mrs. Darlow and her committee raised sufficient funds to start the kindergarten, but a delay was experienced owing to the difficulty of obtaning a suitable building. The Returned Soldiers' hall at Birkenhead lias now been rented for the purpose and a teacher and assistant teacher commenced duty this week. The enthusiasm of Birkenhead resid cuts materially assisted the committee, and a number of men have formed working bees for the purpose of planting out the grounds and making other necessary improvements.
The kindergarten will be officially opened on Tuesdav by the Mayoress, Mrs. J. A. C. Allum.
