LONDON LIBEL ACTION
APOLOGY TO KING LEOPOLD [ 11V Tr.I.F.CH.U'H— raKS.S ASSOCIATION"] WELLINGTON. Thursday The Belgian Consul-General in Wellington has received from the Belgian Foreign Minister in London, Dr. Spaak, supplementary information in connection with the libel action brought by Admiral Sir Roger Keyes against Daily Mirror Newspapers, Limited. The Daily Mirror on May 30, 1940, published an attack against, King Leopold and Sir Roger, who, during tho Belgian campaign, was special liaison officer with the Belgian Sovereign. Apart from expressing regret to Sir Roger, counsel for the Daily Mirror declared: "It is now clear that the attitude of Sir Roger in defending King Leopold has been fully justified. It is also plain that a grave injustice has been committed against King Leopold." They (Daily Mirror Newspapers, Limited) therefore wished to tender to King Leopold their most sincere and respectful apologies. In his summing up Mr. Justice Tucker declared that, contrary to custom, this legal action against a newspaper had fulfilled a useful purpose in evoking truly satisfactory statements.
