MEMBERS WALK OUT

TAKAPUNA COUNCIL OBJECTION TO REMARK Five members of the Takapuna Borough Council left the council-room last night following a remark which the Mayor, Mr. J. Guiniven, made to one of them. The council was discussing the estimates and the defection of five members caused the meeting, which was a special one called for the purpose, to lapse. The five members who withdrew were Messrs. .1. S. Wilcox, F. 11. Carr. C. V. llolyoake, A. K. McFarlane and R. X. White. The Mayor bad presented a draft estimate calling for an increase in the rates of the borough when Mr. White moved that the meeting be postponed until' the council could call a meeting of ratepayers to discuss the position. When another councillor rose to second the motion, the Mayor made the remark to which exception was taken. The councillor protested, and asked Mr. Guiniven to withdraw the remark, and on the request being refused, left the room. The mover and the other three councillors followed.

Eight of the nine councillors were present at the meeting. •
