PAST YEAR'S , DECREASE
A DECLINE OF £3,103,011 (0.C.) WELLINGTON, "Wednesday The expenditure on public works, which exceeded nine million pounds in 1940. dropped to loss than six millions for the financial year .just ended, the exact decline being £3,103,011. The most important activities contributing to the lessened expenditure wore:—Railway improvements and additions to ■ open lines totalling £1,072,1/39j decrease £1,914,480. Railway construction, total £857,931, a decrease of £320,844. Roads, total £599,013, a decrease of £525,577. A new item, the development of linen flax, involved an expenditure of £245,970, and is included in the calculation showing the substantial decline in general expenditure for the year.
