DESERTERS FROM SHIP

DEPORTATION FOR CHINESE [by TELEGRAPH —PHKKS association] AVELLIXGTOX, AVedncsday

After Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., had sentenced two Chinese firemen who had deserted their ship to deportation, an interpreter said there were extenuating circumstances. Mr. Stout: There cannot be any extenuating circumstances. They have landed here without a permit. The interpreter said that while in English waters their ship was bombed and raked with machine-gun fire, bringing home to them the danger they wore in. They thought of their families, and intended to get back to China as soon as they could.

Mr. Stout: That is just what we want them to do.

The men, who were located working in market gardens at Levin, are to be kept in custody until their deportation, up to a period of six months.
