WOMEN ESCAPE

SENTENCES INCREASED

[BV TK r.KG It A I'll —PItK.SS association] AV ELL IX a TOX, AVed nesda y

Two women who escaped in company from the Borstal institution at Point Howard were dealt with by Mr. .1. L. Stout. S.M., to-day. One, who faced theft charges, was sentenced to six months' hard labour, and the other, Elaine Josephine Shingleton, aged 19, a domestic, was charged, with Ronald Edmund Shinglcton, with making a false declaration under the 1 Marriage Act. It was alleged that after she escaped she persuaded a young man to marry her, but in so stating, Detec-tive-Sergeant McLennan said he did not think any good purpose would be served by putting the country to the expense of sending the two for trial, and that he would call no evidence. The charge was therefore dismissed. For escaping from the Borstal, Shinglcton had her term of detention extended by six months.
