DRAINAGE PROPOSALS

AREA AT TAMAKI REPORTS BEFORE BOARD The suggestion that conditions had removed much of the urgency for the time being from the proposed drainage scheme for part of the metropolitan area to the west of the Tainaki River watershed, and the Penrose. Southdown and Westiield industrial areas, was made by the Mayor of Auckland, .Mr. J. A. C. Allllin, at a meeting yesterday of the newly-elected Auckland and Suburban Drainage Hoard. As an outcome of a decision by the previous board, a report it had considered on the subject., together with a memorandum by Sir Ernest Davis, were referred to the new board. In his report the engineer and secretary. Mr. H. H. Wat-kins, said the Housing Department: had suggested that the particular areas in which it was interested in the Tamaki area might he drained temporarily by way of treatment works with an outfall on the loreshore ot the Tamaki River. The first question in designing a main drainage system for the combined area was the selection of a suitable point to discharge the sewage, having in mind the necessity, or otherwise, of treatment works being established. Mr. Watkins had limited consideration to three projects: —An instalment of the Motukorea scheme, in which provision is made for the discharge of a clarified sewage effluent into the Motukorea Channel: temporary utilisation of the board's main outfall works at Orakei; and temporary treatment works with an outfall on the foreshore of the Tamaki River. He recommended that the trades wastes disposal problem of the industrial areas bo disregarded for the time being, and a detailed survey and investigation be made to determine the probable cost of the project to I )ro " vide only for the portion of Auckland citv in the Tamaki area. Protests in respect of the suggested establishment of sewage treatment works in the Tamaki area had been made bv various local bodies and other organisations, said Mr. ntkilis The reports were retcrred by the board vesterday to its Works Committee for consideration.
