SNOW NEAR DUNEDIN

BOISTEROUS NIGHT IN CITY DIFFICULTIES OF MOTORISTS (0.C.) DUNEDIN, Tuesday All hough there was promise of improvement in the weather on Monday morning, conditions changed suddenly late in the afternoon, and Dunedin and districts to the south experienced heavy rain, accompanied by a strong southwesterly wind which brought snow and hail. The night was one of the most boisterous experienced this winter, and town and country residents awoke to find the hills mantled with snow to a low level, the fall being up to three inches deep. The surfaces of the main highways, however, were not frozen, and motorists did not encounter any particular troubles, although poor visibility made driving conditions difficult. The worst of the storm was felt in the city area, and roads giving access to the hill suburbs were treacherous. Flood water covered the main south highway about Waipahi to a depth of *l2 inches, but quickly receded. Central Otago roads remained quite negotiable. The storm abated in Dunedin during this afternoon, but further showers fell tonight, and temperatures remained cold
