CONSCRIPTION OPPOSED

RESOLUTION BY MAORIS A resolution opposing conscription of Maoris was passed at a meeting representative of Auckland city and suburban Maoris, and the Tamaki Maori Patriotic Committee and its branches. Mr. S. Maiolia presided, and the Hon. P. K. Paikea, representative of the Maori race on the Executive Council, addressed the gathering. The following resolution was carried unanimously: "That this meeting is strongly opposed to conscription of the Maoris, but will not place any obstructions whatever in the way of men desiring voluntary enlistment, and further, that every possible effort should be made to recruit men for all branches of service in the home defence." Mr. A. Rolls was elected chairman of the Tamaki Maori Patriotic Committee in c succession to Mr. Maioha, who has been appointed to the temporary staff at Papakura camp.
