MAORI RACE WELFARE* Many activities carried on during the past year were received in the report submitted to the annual meeting of the Auckland Council of Temperance Education last night. A feature of the year's work had been the success in securing the co-operation of Govejrnment departments and other organisations. _ ~ The speaker was the superintendent of the Methodist Maori Mission, the Rev. G. I. Laurenson, who spoke of the value of the work the council was doing for the betterment of the Maori race. A special problem in the Maori temperament arose from the remarkable reverse in the decline of their numbers, which made them now feel that they had a destiny of growing strength. In the decade from 1928 to 1936 fhey increased by 29 per cent, while Europeans increased by 11 per cent. The followinsr ofHc-ers were elected: —President-, Mr. W. IX M. Gialster; depntv-presi-dent, Mr. F. €. Pace; secretary and treasurer, Mr. L.< E. Falkner.
