TWELVE NEW MEMBERS FIRST MEETING ARRANGED ' INSTALLATION OF MAYOR The personnel of the new City Council, as indicated by the provisional count following the election on Saturday, will contain 12 new members and nine of those who sat on the retiring council. Of this 21, only one is a Labour representative, the remainder having been sponsored by the Citizens and Ratepayers' Association. The new .Mayor. Mr. J. A. C. Allum, was also nominated by the association There were 14 Citizens' members on th»* last council. "I these six did not seek re-election. Mr. Allum sought and secured the Mayoralty- Messrs. AY. J. Campbell, A. Donald, W. R. Fee and A. Howey Walker announced their retirement and Mr. J. W. Kealy, who is in the Middle Fast with-the New Zealand Forces, was not a candidate. Labour's Sole Member Those of the old council who went to the poll on Saturday as Citizens nominees and were returned were Miss E. Melville, Captain R. S. Judson, V.C., Dr. R. G. McElroy and Messrs. A. s'. Bailey, A. St. C. Brown, H. P. Burton, H. J. Butcher and J. LCoaklev. The new Citizens' members j are: Messrs. F. N. Ambler, K. N. ; Buttle, W. B. Darlow, A. M. Doull, E. G. Karrell, NY. H. Fortune, W. F. j Fowlds. C. -J. Garland. R. S. Ilarrop, C. J. Lovegrove. \Y. 13. L. Power and S. Takle. Of these Mr. Takle has had previous experience as a member of the council. ! There were seven Labour members on the previous council and of these four sought re-election. Mr. Iv J 1 • Andrews, who had been a member of the council for some years, decided to retire and Mr. R. Armstrong stood as a Labour Independent, but failed to be elected. Mr. J. Sayegh, who contested the Mayoralty, did not offer for the council. The four who were candidates i were Mrs. M. M. Dreaver, and Messrs. W. T. Andorton, M.P-, P. Carr, M.P., and J. J. Sullivan. Only Mrs. Dreaver I gained a seat on the council, the remaining 20 vacancies being filled by Citizens' nominees. Installing the Council In anticipation of the official declaration of the result of the election being made at the latest next Monday, arrangements are being made for the installation of the new Mayor and the swearing in of the council members to take place on the following Wednesday. The procedure on such occasions is for the retiring Mayor to welcome the new Mayor, administer the oath of office, robe him with the mayoral gown and invest him with the chain of office. After the Mayor is installed in the chair he calls on the members of the council to make the usual declaration in which they promise, faithfully and impartially and to the best of their skill and judgment to exercise the powers and authorities vested in them. It is expected that the first ordinary meeting of the council will be held on the following night. Thursday, May 29.
