Shouting advice in their own languages, players of an Allied Soccer team so confused each other that a British Army eleven easily defeated the side near London recently. Tho Allied eleven included Dutch, Belgian, French, Norwegian and Czech players. The Army won by S goals to 2. A competition for a valuable trophy has been arranged for Allied teams.
H. Foley, former Wellington and New Zealand representative cricketer, has been transferred from Wellington to Hastings. A fine opening left-handed batsman, Foley mad© some bis scores in Plunket Shield cricket and in matches against overseas teams. He has not played in big cricket during the past few seasons, but Hawke's Bay enthusiasts are hopeful that he will again be able to take up the game more seriously.
W. N. Johnson, a veteran of the Great War, and one-time outstanding Southland Rugby wing-forward, died in Dunediu last week. Tall, fast, and with a good football brain, Jolinson played for his province from 3*122 to 1927. In his last year of representative football he was given passing consideration for the New Zealand side which toured South Africa in 1928. He played in one trial match and then was dropped by the selectors.
England's greatest Rugby League fullback of all time, J. Sullivan, is this season associated with the Dewsbury Club, the first time he has played with any other club than Wigan. With him have been the Ne\y Zealanders Campbell and Sterling, who went to England with the Rugby League team, whose tour was cut short by the outbreak of war. "These lads," Sullivan recently wrote, "would have made names for themselves had the tour not been so rudely interrupted."
Miss Dorothy Andrus, the well-known American lawn tennis player, has just been married for the second time. She was formerly the wife of Mr. Walter Burke, but resumed the maiden name after her marriage had been dissolved some seven or eight years ago. The grand-daughter of an American millionaire. Miss Andrus was a great iawn tennis tourist. Tall, well built, and fair-haired, she was an ideal doubles partner and she won the London women's doubles championship at Queen's Club, with the French player, Mine. Henrotin, in 19:59.
Ben Hogan is still top money winner of the American winter £?olf circuit. The sle;i Jer professional, who finished second to Harold McSpadon recently in the .!000-dol.lar Thomaiville open, has won 4510 collars —slightly more than the earnings of Johnny Bulla, who finished in a tie for eighth place and has won 1271 dollars. Other winners are Craig Wood (2756), Cla.vtou Heafner (2540). Lawson Little (1800), Leonard Dodson (H 525), Henry Picard (1525), Jim. Demarct (1512), Harold McSpaden (1500), Byron Nelson (1105), Ed Oliver (1150), Johnny Revolta (1100).
The Wanganni Rugby Union is supporting the application for reinstatement of R. Chase, former Wanganui representative five-eighths and later prominent Ruirby League player in Auckland. Brother of T. Chase, New, Zealand League representative. Chase in 'liis Union days was a brilliant inside back. Chase was reinstated once before. He returned to League, however, without playing Rugby again. In support of Chase's application, it was said at the meeting of the Wamranni Union that he in now settled permanently in Moawhango (Taihape), and is not likely to go back to Auckland.
