HORSES FOR CAMP

NEEDS OF MOUNTED UNITS GISBORNE AREA DIFFICULTY [by telegraph—OWN* correspondent] GISBORNE. Thursday Territorial mounted units from the i Gisborne district, which are to enter I camp next mont h for their throe | months' intensive training period, are 'still without sufficient horses to mount | all members, and the efforts of the dis- | trict remount committee, though well I supported in some areas and by many | individual farmers, have not received i the generai support which might have j been expected. On some properties where horses of the best remount type were bred in other days, the supply to-day appears to have fallen away to a mere trickle and there have been instances in which the committee has encountered a coni- | plete lack of interest on the part of owners of likely types of horses. The work of the committee has not | been aided by changes of policy on the part of the Army Department, which from time to time have altered the basis of registration. Recruits who art* to enter camp with their units next month have been placed at a disadvantage, for in the first place they were informed that they could not take their own horses into camp, this information being twice amended in the meantime. The position now is that tho Army Department wishes to include the horses of individual recruits under the registration scheme, which would oblige the owners to keep their horses available lor military training purposes. The choice appears to lie with the individual owners, however, and many are pre pared to take their horses into camp without accepting the continuing obligation, which would affect their right to dispose of the horses after the conelusion of the camping period.
