LARGER AIRPORT
BUILDING ALTERATIONS MECHANICS' BAY EXTENSIONS GREAT INCREASE IN TRAFFIC Substantial additions to the airport offices at Mechanics' Bay are provided for in plans which have been prepared by the Air Department and for which only final approval is required before the work is set in hand. The extensions are the result of the greatly increased traffic which has to be handled at the base and for which the present buildings are inadequate. The additions will be made to the Tasman Empire Airways base, "which also provides customs, lounge and booking facilities for the Pan American Airways service. Congestion has frequently resulted from this double use of the building and it was particularly noticeable last Sunday, when the Clipper arrived with a record passenger list of ;H only a short time before the. flyingboat from Sydney was due. Double the existing floor space will probably be provided by the alterations, the ground floor being extended out toward the waterfront road. This will provide additional space for the customs and immigration and Separate quarters for both the airway companies. The plans also include extra amenities for the passengers and those meeting them and may include a buffet service.
