100 TH BIRTHDAY
RESIDENT OF WAIUKU [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] "WAIUKU, Monday Clear recollections of the town in which he was born and brought up, En-ell. Surrey, are still retained by Mr. Alfred Bashford, of Collingwood Avenue, "NYaiuku, whose 100 th birthday falls to-morrow. Mr. Bashford stated to-day that ha came to New Zealand in 1864, when Auckland was little 211 ore than one street. After periods in Canada, Australia and England, he-returned to the Dominion in 1002 and conducted an orchard at Riverhead for '25 years. In recent years he has lived in retirement at Waiuku. .Mr. Bashford remarked that he had never li<ul o day s illness 111 his 1"® serious enough to koej> him to his bed, but he confessed that about three years ago his knees started to give trouble, and now he finds an armchair a great comfort. "I think it was trying to keep pace with the young ones that affected m v knees," he commented. _ Mr. Bashford. who was _ married twice, has ;>3 descendants living. His birthday will be celebrated by a at his home to-morrow.
