NATIVE LAND RATES
NON-PAYMENT PROBLEM WHANGAREI COUNTY CONCERN When the Attorney-General, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, was in Whangarei recently, a deputation from the Whangarei County Council waited on him in connection with the non-collec-tion by local bodies of rates on native land. Reporting to the council, the chairman, Mr. A. S. Mackay. said that the Minister had been sympathetic and had undertaken to bring the position before his colleagues. Mr. Mackay said that the Minister had been informed that the council would not be able to continue with the maintenance of roads leading to native lauds unless tho rates were paid or the Government made the necessary finance available. It was not fair, Mr. Mackay said, to expect European ratepayers to pay for the maintenance of roads used by Maoris. The council decided to write to the Native Minister, the Hon. F. Langstone. reminding him of the representations made to his colleague.
