FIRE BRIGADES
ON A WAR FOOTING TRAINING AUXILIARY MEN TERRITORIAL RATES OF PAY [by TEL EG It A P IT —1* 11F. S S ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Friday A statement that the War Cabinet had decided to put the lire brigades of New Zealand on a war footing and that the intention was to draft certain men for training as auxiliary firemen in lien of Territorial service was made by the. chairman of the Wellington Fire Board, Mr. S. S. Dean, to-day. These men, Mr. Dean said, would be required to attend training on three nights a week and at week-ends, and would bo paid on the basis of Territorial rates. Mr. Dean was addressing officers and men at the Central Fire Station before attending a meeting of the board. In extending Christmas wishes he referred to the value and importance of tho men's work, which had been well exemplified by what had been achieved by firemen in England since the bombing raids began. In tho event of any raids the tire fighting service would be in the front line, even before the army.
