COLLAPSE OF MAYPOLE
TWO CHILDREN INJURED [FROM OCR OWN correspondent] MATAMATA, Thursday The collapse of a heavy maypole in the Te Poi school grounds resulted in severe injuries to two pupils aged 10. Alan Priestly, son of Mrs. V. Cobliam, of To Poi, received internal injuries, which, although not grave, necessitated his removal to Waikato Hospital, and Jimmy Kapi, a Maori scholar, had his right arm broken. The Te Poi school playground has a number of swings, chutes and other appliances for the children and all of these were thoroughly examined by the committee just prior to the visit of the Minister of National Service, the Hon. R. Semple, to the school, to open it, after remodelling had taken place, a few weeks ago. An examination by Constable W. A. Moore, of Matamata, reveals that the centre of the pole was decayed, with a hard shell of about an inch outside. All playing appliances have been put out of bounds in the meantime.
