CITY RATE RECEIPTS
SATISFACTORY COLLECTION TOTAL ABOVE LAST YEAR Satisfaction with the city rate receipts was expressed yesterday by the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis. "For the eicht months of the financial year receipts from municipal and water rates have amounted to £217,335, compared with £211,820 for the corresponding period last year," Sir Ernest said. "I regard this as a highly satisfactory indication that ratepayers generally are meeting their responsibilities to the city." The collection to date represents less than a third of the total rates collectable for the year, but it is anticipated that from now on receipts will progressively increase. The 10 per cent penalty in respect of demands first sent; out will accrue after January 26. As a matter of internal economy it is not proposed this year to remind ratepayers bv letter of the approaching penalty date as usual. However, payment within the next few weeks will assist a reduced staff. In addition to rates levied for 11.) 10-41, a total of £23.872 had been collected in arrears to November 30. as compared with £21.218 estimated for the whole year, a position which is regarded as very satisfactory Arrears of water rates totalling £">ll3, out of a total of £0731 outstanding, had also been collected up to the end of last month.
