HIRING OF TAXIS
CHARTERING BY TIME INCREASED CHARGES SOUGHT THE APPLICATION ADJOURNED An application for increased charges for taxis hired by time was received yesterday at a meeting of the Auckland Iransport Board, acting as the Metropolitan Licensing Authority. The changes sought were chiefly with respect to scenic drives, funerals and weddings, in which it was desired to have the charge for the first hour or portion of an hour increased from 12s to 15s. Alterations were also put forward for the conditions for the continuation of hiring, Mr. A. J, Sinclair, manager of one of the taxi companies, supported the application. Other matters contained in the application included a request for a modification of the condition requiring the driver of a taxi either to remain in or near his car or leave someone in charge. Mr. Sinclair said that, although those in the front of the rank should have to remain with their cabs if they were to keep their position, he felt there should be relaxation of the rule for those at the back. Easing of the rule requiring drivers to deliver immediately any lost property found in the cab to the office of the controlling authority or a police station was also sought. It was stated that this was often very inconvenient and that a more satisfactory arrangement would be to take anything found to the taxi company's office. After discussion in committee it was decided to adjourn the matter to a further meeting to be held on Thursday morning.
