A SHORTER BIBLE

Mr. Arthur Burrell scorns to feci that, since thero have been shorter Bibles before, there can be no harm in having another. Strictly speaking, this is not a Shorter Bible. When Benjamin Jouett said that "Bothwoll" was too long, Swinburne recast the poem. On being given the revised version Jowett remarked sourly, "Jt's three lines longer than it was before," and thereafter held his peace. Mr. BurreU's Shorter Bible is not actually longer than the ordinary Bible, for it omits such hooks as Leviticus, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Esther, the Song of Solomon, and Jeremiah, and it cuts down some of the others, but it has a good deal in it that the ordinary Bible has not got. It is in reality a selection of theological writings in which extracts from the Bible form the chief part, but whoso quotations from the Apocrypha are nevertheless welcome. It is delightfully printed, the solid blocks of words aro agreeably broken up, and the wholo volume is readable as well as inspiring. "The Shorter Bible." BciiiK the Authorised Version of tlio Bible Arranged and Edited for the General Reader by Arthur Burrell. (Dent.)
