ASHBURTON COUNTY
CENTENNIAL HISTORY How much there is worthy of record —how much to teach and inspire—in the story even of a single county is proved by the history of Ashburton, the latest of the centennial memorials to appear. Mr. John Brown, the author, barely survived to see his work through tiie press. It was a labour of love, elaborated with the care for fact that distinguishes the historical spirit and its value to the county and in New Zealand's annals will . prove enduring. Most stimulating are the storio.s of the pioneers, and against these records of rugged individualism and splendid achievement can be set those of community or collective endeavour through the local authorities. Both in their way are admirable. "Ashburton: Its Pioneers and History. 1853-1030," by John Brown, and published for the Ashburton County and Borough Councils. (A. H. and A "W. Reed.)
