COMPULSORY LOAN
THE TOTAL EXCEEDED MINISTER'S STATEMENT SUBSCRIPTIONS CLOSE TO-DAY An announcement that although he had no precise figures, information he had received indicated that the compulsory war loan of £8,000,000 would be oversubscribed, was made yesterday by the Minister of Finance,, the Hon. W. Nash. He expressed pleasure at the response, and recalled that £7,500,000 had been in sight when he announced a progress total recently. Subscriptions to the loan will close to-day. Provision is made for an appeal where taxpayers affected consider that compliance with the Gazette notice would impose undue hardship. Appeals may be made to the Minister of Finance, and should be addressed to the Secretary of the Treasury. In a statement in the House of .Representatives last month, Mr. Nash said that if the Commissioner of Taxes noticed that there were shortages after the closing date, he would advise the Minister, who would have a notice published in the Gazette. No names would be mentioned, and if the persons concerned then subscribed there was nothing moro to worry about.
