TROTTING CUP

HIGH CLASS PACERS I PROSPECTS OF GREAT JEWEL DUSKY SOUND ALSO FANCIED BY ABAYDOS Although only two Auckland-owned horses. Kohara and Peter Bingen, have succeeded in winning the New Zealand Trotting Cup, the prospects of Great Jewel this year are very bright. The race is to be run at Aldington next ! Tuesday, and the good field should ensure an excellent, contest. Other Auck- | land-owned horses engaged beside I Great Jewel are Bayard and Parisienne. When Kohara won in 1027 he was trained : in Christchurch by J. Bryce, for Mr. J. L. Webb, while Peter Bingen. who scored his second success in 1920, and ran in the ownership of Air. W. Johnstone, was trained at Te Awamutu by J. J. Kennerley, for whom he won the previous year.. Great Jewel, who is owned by Mr. D. Brideson, and Parisienne, owned by Mrs. D. R. Revell, are both trained by It. B. Berry in the South Island. Bayard, owned by Mr. H. E. Salter, is trained by J. Geo at Mangere. Great Jewel did remarkably well last season, winning eight races over distances i from nine furlongs to two miles. He was ' placed on four other occasions, ana completed the season as the highest individual stakeearner, collecting £3OOO. Among a number of high-class performances, his most attrac- ; live was in winning the Le Lievro Handi- ; cap at the Inst New Zealand Cup meeting in 4.17 2-5. As ho won very easily it was an outstanding effort, a repetition of which should make him difficult t-o beat on Tuesday. Chance for Blair Athol Parisienne, one of the best mares to race in the Dominion, showed a return to form on Labour Day, when sho won the Hanna Memorial Handicap at Oamaru. Bayard, a i good performer over all distances, and one 1 of tilt best for his inches, revealed fine form ! 1o win (lie Jellicoe Handicap at Epsom in | 3.15. He was third in the Electric Handicap j at Hntt Park last li'aturday. Carnal,'i who was second lo Lucky Jack i last year has no recent form, but Blair j Athol who was third, and ran .1.1,7 3-5. was ; second to Windsor Lass, in the International Handicap at Addington in August. Blair Athol holds the race record for :l'/ a miles with U.l !• :i-ri and is a fine stayer. Mnriene, winner of the Auckland Trotting Cup, and other good handicaps, won well at the Ai'.dn.igton (August meeting, but sho Is reported to bo under a cloud. Plutus, in the same stable, is very useful, and was fourth last year. Colonel Grattan, who was going very well last year when his driver collapsed, should not be without a chance. A heavy track would suit Marscercs, who. like the majority of the progeny of Man o' War, is at homo under adverse condilions. , Fine Art a Stayer One of the most-discussed candidates, Dusky Sound, made the grade by his splendid efforts in August, when he won the Belgium Handicap and National Handicap, the latter race being generally considered a good Cup test. When he ran second in the Queen Mary Handicap Dusky Sound recorded 4.18 3-5. He is one of the most improved pacers in the race, and should take beating. Pine Art, who won five races last season, is a great pacer when attuned, possessing both -speed and stamina. When he won the Autumn Fiee-for-AU at Addington Fine Art ran 2.3S 3-0 He, is reported to have done weil in his preparation and although unplaced at Oamaru will have a good following. Pot Luc): won the King's Handicap in August, which performance gained him the lightest two miles mark of horses now racing. He is a brilliant pacer, who cannot be overlooked, even from 48yds. The form of Renown's Best, Southern Chief and Horsepower has not been encouraging. The race is full of possibilities, but 6ome likely to be in demand include Great Jewel, Dusky Souno, Fine Art and Bayard.
