FALSE PRETENCES

TERM OF IMPRISONMENT "Accused said he had been drinking, but he is very plaii'sible, and could not have been in drink when he obtained the cheque forms," said Detective-Ser-geant Nalder, when Melville Francis Fry, salesman, aged 26 (Mr. Aekins), pleaded guilty in the Police Court yesterday to nine charges, of obtaining and attempting to obtain goods and money by fraud and false pretences. In a statement produced by Detective Quin, accused admitted committing the offences at New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Hawera and Otahuhu. The magistrate, Mr. J. Morling, said accused had apparently set out on a deliberate campaign of obtaining money by false pretences. He was not entitled to consideration. On a charge of obtaining clothing valued at £l7 4s by stating that he represented a picture corporation, accused was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, to be followed by one year's reformative detention. _ On the other charges he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within two years.
