NEW HOSPITAL
BLOCK FOR SOLDIERS START WITH EXCAVATION BULL-DOZERS IN THE DOMAIN Two bull-dozers and a carry-all scoop were engaged yesterday in a portion of the Domain adjoining the Auckland Hospital preparing the site for the 150bed temporary hospital which is being built to accommodate civilian patients who will give place to sick and wounded soldiers. If the present fine weather continues the excavation will he completed by the Public Works. Department in about a week. It is not known, however, how soon the building of the block, which is to be done by private contract, will begin. This will not be delayed for the consolidation of the spoil, as the excavation is being done so that no part of the building will rest on filling. Situated on a sunny slope beside the new Centennial Avenue through the Domain, the hospital will be built in the form of an H. The two long sides will face across Grafton Gully toward the University. To reduce the work of excavation the slope will be terraced and the back of the block will bo one storey less than the front. The- bull-dozers are at present stripping off the top soil, which will bo used later in the beautifying of the grounds.
