PRIMARY GIRLS
GIFTS TO RED CROSS SPLENDID WAR EFFORT PUPILS FROM 41 SCHOOLS The gifts of the Auckland primary school girls to the lied Cross Society were formally received on Saturday morning by Sister Carter, of the Junior Red Cross. The work of the girls, which comprised 7100 articles from 41 schools, was of excellent quality and made a comprehensive display, showing the ! great industry and thoroughness which had been encouraged in this method of training in good citizenship. The articles ranged from knitted soldiers' comforts to colourful bedcovers and attractive garments for small children and also included hundreds of articles definitely designed for hospital use. The schools represented were mostly in the city and suburbs but gifts had also come from several country and native schools. The display of gifts was specially arranged so that teachers and others could see the results of a scheme which was inaugurated last July, following a meeting of teachers convened by the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute with the approval of the Auckland Education Board. With co-operation from officials of the Junior Red Cross, a committee of women teachers organised the scheme which has produced such an excellent response. The gifts to the Red Cross Society do not represent the whole of the war effort of ttie primary school girls. Some city and provincial schools work with local branches of the Patriotic Committee, the Red Cross Society and Lady Galway Patriotic Guild, wliile others send gifts of knitted woollen goods and supplies of khaki handkerchiefs to Yorkshire House for inclusion in soldiers' parcels.
