LONDON FUND

'ATit. RAID "VICTIMS JOTAL REACHES £13,348 RACING CLUB'S FINE GIFT The appeal to the people of Auckland for funds to assist cases of distress in London caused by enemy air raids has , met with a ready and characteristically generous response. Subscriptions in the city area alone have already exceeded the quota fixed for the entire province, so that with sufficient funds' available to meet the Auckland portion of the £IOO,OOO from the: patriotic funds which the GovernorGeneral, Viscount Gahvay, cabled to London-, it has been decided to close the Herald's special list shortly. It will be. open to receive donations during the coining week and will close definitely next Saturday. Contributions to the fund yesterdayamounted to £2959 14s 2d, which has brought the total to £13,348 8s 2d. An outstanding contribution received yesterday was that of £IOOO forwarded by the committee of the Auckland Racing Club. Nino fat steers sent to Westfield by Mr. R. J. Hill, of Ohinewni, ivere sold free of cost by Dalgety and Company, Limited, and realised £ll2 17s 6d for the fund. The Larger Needs With finance provided to meet the London call, as well as a sum in reserve lor further demands, the standing committee of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council announced yesterday that the united efforts of the organisation would now be concentrated upon the continuation of the campaign in the Auckland Province to ensure that adequate provision was made for the other equally commendable objects of the appeal. From October 1, stated the committee, the appeal would' be focussed on the raising throughout the Auckland Province of the £250,000 which the Provincial Council had set itself to collect as part of the Dominion-wide campaign for £1,000,000 for all patriotic purposes. It was pointed out that all the iunds of the Auckland council were administered and controlled solely by it for many outstanding purposes. These included rehabilitation, relief, assistance and support-of dependants of members and ex-members of the fighting forces, and the necessitous members of the forces themselves; and many other forms of assistance.
