FINE RESPONSE

ORPHANAGES APPEAL OVER £2OOO RECEIVED MANY RETURNS TO COME The street appeal made throughout the Auckland Province yesterday on b-ilialf of the Auckland Orphanages Advisory Council met •with a splendid response from the public in the city and suburbs, and over £2005 had been received when checking was concluded at a late hour last night. This figure does not include the returns from eight of the large suburban districts. Tn the city, £1268 was received in the collection boxes, which were handled by a large group of ladies who were on duty in relays throughout the day. Community singing in the Town Hall and collections made by concert parties traversing the streets in motorlorries realised over £IOO. The collections in the suburban returns to hand were: —Mount Eden, £B3; Newmarket, £81; Birkenhead, £50,• Northcote, £4O; Mount Albert (part only), £.'34; Ellerslie, £26; Howick, £9. The ideal spring weather undoubtedly contributed materially to the excellent result, and the collectors in the main shopping areas of the'city had a busy time in the thronged streets. Tributes to the untiring efforts of the ladies who worked so hard were paid on behalf of the orphanages council. A colourful note was provided in the procession of decorated motor vehicles bearing parties of gaily-costumed collectors, whoso efforts to obtain donations from the onlookers were highly successful. The promoters of the appeal, -which was designed to raise £IO,OOO, are confident that when the complete returns are compiled the major amount of the objective will be realised. Among the coins counted last night were two half-sovereigns. One was a Queen Victoria coin dated 1882, while the other bore the head of Bang Edward VII., the date being 1906. HAMILTON'S CONTRIBUTION SUM OF £231 COLLECTED [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] HAMILTON, Friday The sum of £234 was collected in tho streets of Hamilton to-day by members of women's church organisations on behalf of the provincial orphanage appeal.
