SINKING OF TUG
SYDNEY HARBOUR MISHAP COLLISION WITH FREIGHTER (Received September 23, 31.20 iun.) SYDNEY, Sept. 23 One of the best-known and most powerful tugs in Sydney Harbour, the Hero, was sunk this afternoon when she', was struck by a freighter which she was assisting to berth. One member of the crew of five, Mr. John Downie, was drowned. The remainder, including Captain S. Weldon, were rescued by water police launches. The collision occurred close to tlie Harbour Bridge while the Hero and another tug were moving into position to take towlines. The Hero was struck amidships and turned completely over. £>he sank in a few minutes, stern first. The Hero was owned by the J. Fen.wick Proprietary, Limited.
